Fibroscan Equipment

What is Fibroscan?

Fibroscan is an advanced liver ultrasound imaging tool that physicians use to diagnose and manage chronic liver disease. It is a painless and non-invasive procedure that provides valuable insights into the health of your liver.

Non-Invasive

No needles, no biopsy required

Quick & Easy

Results in just 10-15 minutes

Accurate

Precise measurement of liver health

How Does Fibroscan Work?

Fibroscan provides two critical measurements: elasticity and attenuation.

  • Elasticity indicates the amount of fibrosis, or scar tissue, you have in your liver
  • Attenuation relates to the level of fat in the organ

These measurements help determine if you have fatty liver disease and its severity.

What to Expect During Your Fibroscan

1

Preparation

Fast for 4 hours prior to your examination and wear clothing that allows access to your rib cage.

2

Comfortable Position

You'll lie down on an examination table with a small pad placed under the right side of your back.

3

Gentle Procedure

The pad vibrates gently to create waves that pass through your liver, measured with an ultrasound probe.

Understanding Your Fibroscan Results

Dr. Fernando Ibarra will provide you with two Fibroscan scores: one related to fibrosis and the other to fat. Based on your scores, you'll understand what stage of fibrosis you are at and what grade or percentage of fat you have.

Fibrosis Stages

F0 None
F1 Mild
F2/F3 Moderate
F4 Severe (cirrhosis)

Steatosis Grades

S0 Healthy
S1 Mild
S2 Moderate
S3 Severe

Progression of Liver Disease

Early diagnosis is key to reversing progression

Liver Disease Progression

Healthy Liver

Normal liver function

NAFLD

Fatty accumulation in the liver - Reversible

NASH

Fatty with inflammation and scarring - Reversible

Cirrhosis

Scar tissue replaces liver cells - Irreversible

Important: The NAFLD and NASH stages are considered reversible, while cirrhosis is irreversible.

Why is Early Detection Important?

Fatty liver disease is considered a silent epidemic because there are typically no noticeable symptoms, which can lead to underdiagnosis. With early detection and intervention, fatty liver disease can be halted or even reversed.

Making healthy lifestyle changes, such as eating a nutritious diet and exercising, can greatly improve your liver health.

Symptoms to Watch For

While fatty liver disease may not present obvious symptoms, there are signs to be aware of:

  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain

Higher Risk Factors

If you have type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, or metabolic disease, you may be at higher risk for fatty liver disease and should discuss screening with Dr. Ibarra.
